Judging from the deer racks that adorn the walls here at Amherst High School, big whitetail bucks are no big deal in the eyes of the locals. For those of us who are somewhat new to the area, however, the sight of a big buck is far from commonplace. I marvel at the bucks I see in photos of the students and staff. It is not hyperbole to state that central Wisconsin may have some of the best bucks in all of North America. I recently had the good fortune to spy one in my backyard and was able to snap off a couple of photos before he turned and sprinted off for parts unknown. In describing this incredible woodland creature, the first word that came to my mind was “majestic.” The next morning, I shared my photo with a couple of other people and one of them also commented with the word “majestic.” A buck with a great rack stands proud like a regal king. We all know the look. I appreciated the opportunity just to lock eyes with it but for a moment. Far better to lock eyes this way than the last time I locked eyes with a doe in my headlights — that altercation led to the total destruction of my dodge. Good luck hunters, but I’m not going to mind if the buck in my photo survives the upcoming gun deer season and visits again some time in the future. I’ll be waiting with my camera.
