With the calendar turning to the month of February, and fast approaching March, the Amherst boys’ basketball program set their sights towards the end of the regular season, and a spot in the postseason. With only a handful of games left on the schedule, multiple students led the team towards the home stretch of the 2024-25 season.
As of February 21, junior Sully Perkins leads the team in scoring with 11 points per game, while sophomore Taylan McCormick is second on the team with nine per game. Perkins and McCormick are neck in neck in scoring percentages. Perkins is 45% at the hoop, 45% from the free throw line, and 35% from the three-point line. McCormick is similar, with 42% at the hoop, 64% when at the free throw line, and 31% from beyond the arc.
Looking ahead to the playoffs, which begin on March 4, it is tough to determine who the Falcons will face in the opening round, as brackets are decided by a computer system. However, there are some hard hitters that Amherst will have to face during the postseason. One of them is the Freedom Irish, who look to be the #1 seed, after gathering an overall record of 17-1, with an undefeated conference record of 13-0. Another team the Falcons will have to prepare for is conference foe Wittenberg-Birnamwood. The Chargers currently hold a 14-2 record, with a conference record of 9-1. Amherst faced them earlier this season, and dropped both games 48-72 and 51-60.
Amherst will find out their playoff fates on February 23, when the WIAA will officially announce the brackets for the road to the Kohl Center.
(Editor’s note: Amherst received a #10 seed and opened against #7 Wrightstown where the Falcons lost. Wrightstown went on to upset Wittenberg and win the regional. Amherst finished the season with a record of 7-18.)
