As winter comes to an end, many people are trading sleds and skis for tents, kayaks and other summer stuff. It won’t be long and the lakes will open up with nearby camping opportunities. Some of the best places to camp in Wisconsin are Holcombe Pine Point Campground, HTR Door County Campground, Northern Lights Campground at Devil’s Lake, White Mound County Park , Big Bay Town Park on Madeline island. All of these places have their plusses and minuses.
Holcombe Pine Point Campground is located on the beautiful lake Holcombe. Most of the campsites come equipped with a dock on the serene lake. If you have a boat, the campground has a boat launch so you can bring your boat with you to fish. Nearby there are two golf courses so there is always something to do. And with town being only a six-minute drive away you can always get supplies or stop for a fish fry. Over all this is a great place for anyone who wants a laid back camping experience.
HTR Door County Campground is on the beautiful Door County peninsula. The campground has a pool and you have access to utilities. The location in Door County is incredible with amazing parks; take for example Peninsula State Park with great hiking trails, or Cana Island Lighthouse with its amazing views. Also, there are great restaurants that are very close like the Shipwrecked Brew Pub & Restaurant and Wild Tomato Wood-Fired Pizza. This is a good campsite for anyone who likes to hike or sight see.
Big Bay Town Park is on Madeline island. The campground has flush toilets, wifi and a beach as well as three hiking trails. Madeline island is situated on Lake Superior and the only way to get on the island is by ferry from Bayfield. On the island there is the town of La Pointe which has many good restaurants as well as a rental shop for bikes and kayaks. Madeline island is home to three parks with many hiking trails between them. There are also five white sand beaches. Overall, it is an excellent campsite for anyone who loves the water.
Northern Lights Campground at Devil’s Lake State Park offers electric and water and every site has a fire pit. The campground is 12 miles from Baraboo and inside the state park. Devil’s Lake State Park has many great trails including Devil’s Doorway Loop which has incredible views of Devil’s Lake. Also there are two beaches to go to at the park, one on the north side and one on the south. Both have ice cream and rental places if you want to get ice cream or a boat. This is a great campground if you like being out in nature but still like the options to go into town.
The final campground that I will go over is White Mound County Park. The closest town is Plain, Wis., which is 21 miles away. The campsite has electric and water sites and a staffed building that offers drinks, activities, and rentals. The park has a big lake and hiking trails around it. Though the trails may not be as serene as others on this list there are a good assortment of birds and wildlife to keep them interesting. Another interesting thing is that this park has a horse campground and many horse trails if you want to bring horses. This is a great campground if you want a true outdoor camping experience without leaving the campground.
No matter which of these parks you choose, you are bound to have a great time. After being cooped up in the house all winter, get ready go spend some time outdoors! Wisconsin’s campgrounds are a joy to behold and there’s no better way to experience them than spending the day hiking, fishing, swimming, boating, etc., and ending the day in front of the campfire.
