Playing sports in high school is beneficial in many ways including academic achievement, physical growth, and career development. Participation in school sports also benefits the school and teams.
Playing sports in high school improves health in many ways. Playing sports may help prevent childhood diabetes and improves heart health. Metabolism is also raised and physical strength and mobility is increased. Staying active can improve a sleep schedule as well.
Keeping active by playing a high school sport can help increase academic performance. Playing a sport means increased blood flow to the brain which develops stronger connections between nerves which enhances memory and concentration among other things.
Many people also play sports to stay fit and in shape. Playing sports all year round can help with body image, self esteem, and confidence, according to Dr. Sorosh Amanat, a family medicine practitioner. Staying active may also help realize how functional one’s own body is which can also help with confidence and self worth.
Playing sports can also look good on a college resume, especially if the sports are stuck with for all four years of high school. High school sports can also change futures entirely, if selected for a scholarship, college options may change, and plans for the future might drastically change along with that. Whole futures and lives could someday revolve around the sports chosen in high school.
Many sports here at Amherst are lacking athletes and anyone is welcome to join; most would get a lot of playing time and many fun experiences. Teams are close knit and anyone new or old fits right in. A team can be very beneficial to anyone as teams are comforting, understanding and hold their teammates to the best they can be which many people need.
Some people might say that sports leave athletes more prone to injury, and while this can be true, athletes are also likely to recover quicker and be better off in the long run, safe from long term disabilities such as diabetes and cardiovascular issues, according to Dr. Amanat.
Critics argue that sports decrease academic performance because athletes are too busy to do their homework, but this is simply not true as most athletes finish their homework in school or find time after school, and they are able to do their homework better because of the blood flow to their brain and the nerve connections made by staying active.
Playing sports in high school is beneficial in all the ways that count like physically, academically, and for the future. Participation in a school sport also benefits teammates and the school. So consider joining a school sport, for your own benefit!
