It’s that time of year again as the leaves fall and temperatures decrease. It’s time to conduct another hunting season, with bow deer season beginning on the 13 of September and turkey season lasting until November 21. It will be important that you have blinds and cameras set up in a good place and that you stay safe.
The deer bow season started on the 13th and goes until January 3. Some tips and things to remember this season are to look for the edge of the field when choosing a place to sit or set up your blind, as this is often the area where bedding areas are located. Then you need to look at places where deer traveled. You can find this out by using cameras and by looking for areas with water and choke points where deer need to move through. An example, a hole in a fence can be found with maps or by walking around where you want to hunt.
Well-situated cameras will tell you everything about where deer are and when they move. The Minnesota DNR says that you should set your cameras by first choosing your area based on deer trails and deer prints. Once you have a rough area, try to face the camera north or south to deal with glare or pictures of the sun taking up your camera’s SD card; furthermore, if you have a camera that sends photos to you always have an SD card in it so your pictures will always be saved. The height and angle you use on your cameras is up to you but generally you want to ha
ve it up 5 feet and have it at a 45-degree angle. After you have the position, adjust the follicle point if you have one
Safety with all weapons is similar, always treat every weapon as if it is ready to fire; keep the weapon pointed in a safe direction, make sure you know what is behind the target, and don’t put your hand by the firing mechanism until you are ready to shoot. It is also important to wear orange and tell someone where you are going. Finally, make sure that you stay on your property in which you have gained permission to hunt.
It looks like it is going to be a good season but being safe, setting your stand and cameras up in the right places can make it a great year.
