The Amherst High School Varsity Football Team enters the final week of the regular season with a dominating 7-1 record and a secure spot in the playoffs! The team’s success is representative of all of the hours they put in, their dedication to one common goal, and the connection these players have built with each other.
The Falcons are very strongly based around a “player led team” which requires great leadership and trust within the team. The following comments by the team’s captains speak to this underlying commitment.
What does it mean to you to be named varsity captain?
Senior Gibson Kenyon: “Responsibility, they chose me, it’s a leadership role, pressure of getting better everyday and keeping the edge to benefit the team.”
Junior Ayden Nerdal: “Keep the guys energy up, leading through hardships.”
Senior Michael Glodowski: “Represent the team, be a face to the numbers/stats. I want to be a positive representation of what the community sees when they think about Falcon football.”
Senior Cannen Hodges: ”I am a person people can depend on when times are good or bad.”
Senior Judah Cole :”I have a responsibility to show leadership, be involved, and to help bring up the underclassmen.”
Ayden Nerdal (Junior, RB)
What does it mean to you to wear the Falcons uniform? “Wearing this jersey means a lot to me, it’s an honor to those who came before, to honor their success and hard work. And as players we are working our hardest to keep that success alive.”
Do you have any pre-game rituals you like to do before each game?
Listen to rock music, get everyone fired up in the locker room before we run out to the field.
Michael Glodowski (Senior, QB)
What does the team do in the days prior to Friday night to get prepared to face their next competition? “Every week the team has 4 practices, 2 full team lifts, film study in their own time and as a team to lay out what needs to be done to come out ready to play on Friday night. We also have team meal on Thursday night before every game which is a great time to get the team all together somewhere other than the field. I’d like to give a big shout out to the community and family members that have helped with these meals as well. It truly makes a difference.”
On a Friday night, what is your favorite part of playing for the Falcons?
“The energy of the game, playing it and being with the guys, but most importantly seeing the community come out to support us. Especially the youth, when I was a kid, I really looked up to the high schoolers as role models. I love being able to do the same for them.”
Gibson Kenyon (Senior, OL)
What’s some of the best reasons for being a member of Amherst football? “Everyone is part of the team, freshman to seniors, it’s a place to make new friends and trustworthy connections, it really is a brotherhood.”
Is there a favorite moment from the season thus far? ”The feeling after every win, to see all the work the boys put in all week pay off. The adrenaline that comes with walking to our huddle after the game is over. It’s a great feeling.”
Judah Cole (Senior, OL)
What brought you to where you are today? “The offseason lifting and workouts, early mornings and late night, having a great coaching staff that wants me to succeed, and just an overall want to perform”
Who do you play for? “I play for my older brother, I feel like his season was kinda taken away from him, and I want to show him all that I can do. I work my hardest to make him proud. Whether that’s on or off the field.”
Cannen Hodges (Senior, TE)
With many moving parts on the field, how does the team stay working as one machine? “We all have one common goal, we work hard together and remember it takes a team to win, not just an individual player.”
Going into the playoffs, what is the mindset for the Falcons?
“One practice at a time, one win at a time, and focus on the now.”
Based upon the comments of these five captains, the Falcons will continue to push and work as a team as they fight for their every success. As the playoffs approach, the Falcons share one common goal. The Falcons close the regular season at Wittenberg-Birnamwood before awaiting playoff seeding. Come show your support as the Falcons make their way through the playoffs.
