The Amherst girls volleyball team has emerged from conference play with a regular season record of 6-1, sharing co-conference honors with Wittenberg-Birnamwood, whom they swept in three sets on September 30.
Senior captains Caly Lepak and Delaney Conner believe the team’s success can be attributed to camaraderie and a deep commitment to the team shared by all players.
Lepak said the favorite part of the season for her so far has been the team bonding and relationships she shares with the girls. Even though practice can be hard at times, her teammates always seem to put her in a better mood. Along a similar vein, Conner said she has most enjoyed getting to know new people and getting ready in the locker room before the games by listening to music and helping each other with their hair.
The captains credit these deepening relationships with aiding communication during the matches.
“Our team has been playing well this season because of our communication and the dedication we have. We have put up a great fight this season so far and we will continue to do so the rest of the way,” Delaney said. “I think the team has played so well this season because of how close we are and the trust we built over the season.”
Connor’s favorite match this season was their last conference game against Iola-Scadinavia on October 14, sweeping them 3-0. Lepak pointed to the sweep against Pacelli as her favorite match. “It was a good and intense game but I had lots of fun. I also got to play Granny in the locker room which was very funny. My favorite part was seeing my best friends and playing against them,” Lepak said.
Conner and Lepak are each planning to attend a four-year university after high school. The Falcons open regional play against Wittenberg-Birnamwood on Thu., Oct. 23.
