Freshmen soccer girls look to upperclassmen for guidance

The freshman class of 2027 may be inexperienced with lots of room for growth but they have great team spirit and a desire to contribute to the success of the Amherst girls soccer team this season.

“You have to work hard in practice and always do your best if you wish to improve,” said Nora Bohm, a center defender. “It’s important to listen to the coaches and our more experienced teammates.”

The freshmen had their first JV game on April 9 at Medford High.

The freshman girls on the soccer team acknowledge their improvement and greatly appreciate the upperclassmen. Ellie Laws said, “Among the Varsity team of upperclassmen, I definitely think of Claire, she is always so uplifting when giving comments to the team. But along with Claire, Jen is also always so sweet and helpful, and gives good advice.” The freshmen are supported by all of the varsity upperclassmen and are encouraged and driven to better themselves for the team.

For the freshmen coming into the sport, it is extremely important for them to enjoy their sport. “The best part about being in soccer, is definitely the games. I really like hanging out with friends and playing for my school,” said Laws, a wing.

As freshmen work on skills daily, they seek to become more proficient as they get ready for varsity play. “To get minutes in a varsity game as a freshman I have to make sure I am always doing my best in practices, warm-ups, and the game,” said Bohm, a left forward.

Essentially, the freshmen are growing as individual soccer players, with plenty of time to improve their performances prior to playing in a varsity game. With their drive to become better, the freshmen have greatly uplifted the spirit of the team as a whole.
