Globally, wildlife populations on average have decreased nearly 70 percent since 1970 mainly due to habitat loss. It is the job of the wildlife biologist to help drive this number down. This is one of the reasons why I think we are in a wildlife biologist crisis. Wildlife biologists have to tackle the world’s natural problems, like climate change, and be able to predict natural patterns around the world. There are currently about 65,000 job openings throughout the field of wildlife biology as of 2025.
One problem wildlife biologists are trying to help solve is climate change. The climate is changing at a scary rate, which is not only impacting humans, but the animals across the world too. They have to help try and make the most of the declining agricultural practices. According to The Biologists, “biologists are helping farmers grow more productive, climate-friendly crops and livestock.” This is telling us that biologists have to work closely with either the seed and agriculture companies or the farmers themselves to teach eco-friendly practices. When biologists educate the people on how to responsibly farm, perhaps then we can reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and help slow down the rapidly increasing problem of climate change.
Another thing about being a wildlife biologist is you can have a very enjoyable job if you enjoy nature and animals as 75% of your time is spent outside with the other 25% inside to do paper work. The average salary for a wildlife biologist in the United States is $73,000, which is about $10,000 more than the average U.S. salary. The highest paying jobs for a wildlife biologist is out west. The highest paying states include Washington, Oregon, and Alaska. These are high paying states because a big portion of the state deals with natural resources and there is a bigger demand for biologists.
One of the last major things biologists need to help with is being able to predict nature patterns, such as soil microbes to see what can be grown in a certain area. According to Bioscience “…the research team tweaked factors like precipitation, temperature, nitrogen deposition, and carbon dioxide concentration in soil.” This shows all of the components to just the soil/land side of things the biologists have to do for their job. There are many different fields that are open to biologists. You can go into soil, animals, or climate control.
In conclusion, there is a great need for wildlife biologists in the U.S. They can help control the climate and the soil health around the world. We need more people in the future to help take care of the environment, and Biologists are here for the job.
