The Amherst Girls Soccer season came to an end on Saturday, June 6 at Green Bay NEW Lutheran with a final score of 6-0.
While the score was lopsided, the team played their hearts out. Kudos to the defense and sophomore keeper Amelia Scheunemann, who kept the game close.
This Green Bay team is a co-op team made up of students from Green Bay NEW Lutheran and Green Bay Providence Academy. The team advanced to the Division 4 Sectional Semifinal vs Howards Grove on June 11 at Lawrence University. NEW Lutheran has an overall season record of 13-2-1.
A girl from the opposing team was overhead to say, “This is the first game in a while that we didn’t win by the mercy rule.” (In division four high school soccer, if a team is up by 8 points by the 60-minute mark, the game ends.) In truth, five of their last seven games had ended with the mercy rule; in the other two games, NEW tied Sturgeon Bay 1-1 on 5/14 and lost to Kohler 1-2 on 5/28.
The Lady Falcons ended the season with a 6-11-2 record, 2-6-1 in conference.
Thank you to seniors Ava Krebsbach, Kasey Werachowski, and especially captains Ava Lansing, Mia Rockefeller, and Hannah Rekowski for setting a great example for the underclassmen and proving that just because your opponent expects an easy win does not mean that’s what will happen. After all, let’s not forget that early season game against Assumption and the playoff win against Berlin.
