With consistent and enduring efforts, a number of promising young student journalists have been elevated to staff positions at the Talon, the school’s student online newsmagazine.
Senior Faith Sopa has been named student editor-in-chief and will carry the title to graduation. Both co-advisor Merry Dudley and I agree that a student editor should be capable, doggedly determined, and driven to succeed. Those traits completely describe Sopa. She will help formulate the monthly story bank of ideas and then see stories to their completion and placement while also carrying out the role of reporter and photographer as needed in a leadership role.
The role of managing editor goes to senior Addison Lafler, an idea student ambassador with her disarming and friendly demeanor. She will work to facilitate the editorial process which often means following up on photos, some layout design work, quote outreach, finishing and ironing out details, etc.
Juniors Ian Dudley and Alex Duley lead the sports department. Dudley has written faithfully about soccer while contributing to the promotion of other sports through photography the past two years. Duley is persistent in following up on his sources, always strives to write a compelling story, and meets deadlines. They will help reach out to coaches and players in an effort to develop content here for the Talon as well as the Spirit.
After further cultivating her interest in photography at volleyball games this past season, junior Taryn Loken is looking to lead the coverage of the girls basketball team. The first of her basketball photos are published here now.
The incomparable senior Tiris Byrd heads up the department of arts and entertainment. An aspiring voice actor, and forensics participant, he also dabbles in poetry (some of which is published here). I appreciate his view on literary topics (as witnessed in English 12), which one may also find published here from time to time.
Ever the outdoorsman, junior Tyler Polster is a veteran when it comes to reporting on hunting and other outdoor topics such as camping and state parks. He never misses a deadline and is always looking forward towards the next dates of importance for area sportsmen and women.
Junior Ila Culver published an outstanding cross country story this past season, one that was published in the Community Spirit, and is a talented photographer and artist. She is capable of writing on any host of topics with a great photo to complement her efforts.
Seniors Courtney Groholski and Calee Schulist launched short Talon sports and school-related promotional videos earlier this year. Look for upcoming videos in the weeks ahead as the winter sports season gets underway. They are two long-time good friends whom we have labeled “the wonder twins” with expectations of a video or two per week.
Of special note this month is senior Lelu Tobler, a contributor as both an artist and a writer. We are always looking to publish stories while adding staff members who wish to contribute on a more regular basis. The Talon remains a great opportunity for students who wish to promote the school community through writing (text), photography, and video.
A final note: We are extremely grateful for the efforts of these students and others. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
