For many years, the leader of girls soccer in our area has been the Assumption Royals in Wisconsin Rapids.
But on Tuesday, April 21, the Falcons upset the powerhouse, beating them 3-0 at Heartland Farms Field in Amherst.
Junior Emerie Schelke shocked the Royals and thrilled the Amherst faithful by scoring in the first 90 seconds of the game.
“That really boosted our confidence and let us know that this was going to be a good game,” senior and captain Mia Rockefeller said. “We just had to keep it up.”
And in the second half, junior Naomi Bohm scored two breakaway goals in quick succession — just 21 seconds apart! — to seal the win. All three goals were assisted by captain Hannah Rekowski.
“I just have to thank my captains for great assists,” Naomi said. “I just ran to the ball.”
“[She] just kept shooting!” Mia added.
“It was an impressive defensive effort,” said assistant coach Jonathan Blatchley. “[There were] no shots on goal for the opposing team.”
In the history of Amherst’s girls soccer program, this was only the third time the Falcons have beat Assumption.
“I’m a senior and all the times we ever played Assumption it was a hard game and we didn’t quite make,” Mia explained. “I think [the win is] really encouraging for the team,…. We’re doing really well.”
Captain and senior Ava Lansing is really proud of this year’s team.
“I think this team and all of these girls are just so near and dear to all of our hearts. We’re all so happy to be here. Just seeing everybody succeeding and working together means absolutely everything,” Ava said.
“We have to keep them in line sometimes,” she laughed. “There are some hard practices, hard days, but we’re really happy to be doing what we’re doing.”
With two more games this week. Hannah hopes the win will keep team morale high.
“[This win] definitely gives us confidence,” Hannah said. “Hopefully we can carry over the momentum into future games and give us a little boost. Hopefully we can rest up in time [for the games] later this week.”
