The Amherst Falcons Girls Flag Football team recently completed its third season as a club sport in the Central Wisconsin Flag Football League. The league features many of the larger schools from the Fox Valley area, but despite being one of the smaller schools in the conference, the Lady Falcons proved they could compete with anyone on the field.
Over the course of six games during the month of May, Amherst compiled a league-high 273 points — averaging more than 45 points per game. The high-powered offense was led by junior wide receiver Alexis Wierzba, who paced the Falcons in receiving yards and touchdowns.
Head Coach Shaun Anderson praised Wierzba’s impact on the offense. “Lexi is a great route runner and has exceptional hands,” Anderson said. “She tracks the football really well and demands a double team on almost every play.”
The Falcons showcased offensive firepower throughout the season, with Miranda Pingel, Hollie Singer, Aubrey Chandler, Presley Voss, Grace Roberts, and Tera Stormoen all contributing touchdowns.
Amherst wrapped up its season Friday night (May 15) in front of a robust home crowd. The Falcons defeated the Weyauwega-Fremont Warhawks before falling to the undefeated Xavier Hawks. Amherst finished the season with a 3-3 record.
Despite the .500 finish, the Falcons were highly competitive throughout the season. Prior to the loss against Xavier, Amherst’s two other defeats were decided on the final play of the game.
“It’s tough to lose that way, but it showed the great effort from everyone involved,” Anderson said. “Having a chance to win in nearly every game is all you can ask for.”
