Three students from Amherst High School were recently awarded for their research and presentations on state and local history. The students are members of Mr. Dummer’s Local History class and were selected by judges from the Tomorrow River Valley Historical Society.
Kayden Vander Laan earned highest marks with his presentation on protests for the Vietnam War held in Madison and Stevens Point. The junior student earned $100.
Addison Lafler, a senior, earned 2nd Place and $50 researching her three great-uncles, Kenny, Glenn, and Danny Teschner and their impact on the community. The three boys passed away due to battles with muscular dystrophy.
Freshman student, Anitza Lopez, earned $25 for presenting on the history of volleyball at Amherst. She examined the importance of Title IX on the development of the sport.
Runners-up included senior student, Shiloh Lemke and sophomore, Athena Nowland. Lemke presented on her her famous ancestor, Norwegian children’s author Hans Aanrud. Nowland presented on Wisconsin’s circus history telling the story of the Ringling brothers and the Engford family of Plover.
The Tomorrow River Valley Historical Society’s youth outreach is made possible by support from an anonymous community donor. This is the third year in which Mr. Dummer’s class and the TRVHS were able to collaborate to support student education. The TRVHS would like to thank all students who participated.
