On December 1, the Amherst Girls Basketball team stormed into Northern Lutheran High School and dominated to start the season with a perfect record of 3-0. The girls beat Northland Lutheran, 55-25. The top scorers were junior Hollie Singer with 18, and senior Presley Voss and junior Alexis Wierzba each with 10.
One night later, the girls continued their winning streak with a win against Iola-Scandinavia, 51-41. Wierzba led the way for the team with 19 points followed by Junior Ivy Boelk with 10 points.
Wierzba was the leading scorer just a few nights later — on Friday, December 5 — when the team flew into Manawa and beat the Wolves 45-33. With this win, the girls continue their unbeaten season at 5-0. Wierzba scored 14 points, senior Courtney Groholski had 11 points, and Singer chipped in 10 points.
Next up was Port Edwards on December 8. The girls improved to 6-0 to start the season by defeating the Blackhawks, 49-31. After being close the last few games, Wierzba hit an impressive 20 points, while Voss added 13.
But the win streak ended on December 12 when the Amherst girls basketball team took on Shiocton, losing by just three points at 43-40. Top scorers were Wierzba with 12 points and Voss with 11.
On December 19, the girls faced a tough challenge vs Wittenberg-Birnamwood, losing 83-14. But the girls put in a strong effort and all contributed evenly.
During the holiday break, the girls participated in the Sentry Classic Tournament, taking on Almond and Pacelli. Wierzba was the top scorer for Amherst, but the team had to take the tough loss, falling 60-34. Two days later, Amherst played hard against Pacelli, losing 69-22.
This brings the team to a four-game losing streak, but hopefully they can make a comeback in the next couple of games. Their overall record is now 6-5.
