The ever-competitive Lady Falcons went 8-5 to open the softball season thanks to some great pitching by Samantha Nooyen and some timely hitting from an emerging group of young-and-promising hitters.
March 30 vs Bonduel: OK, so it’s not an April game recap, but the Lady Falcons Softball team opened their season with a home game versus Bonduel in late March. (Bonduel was under water, so the game was moved to Amherst.) The team lost 18-4 but at least they got on the field. Samantha Nooyen led the Falcons with two hits and Jackie Nooyen collected her first two Varsity hits, including a double in the fourth inning. Calee Schulist, Lexi Martin, and Sascha Gollon each added a hit for Amherst.
April 6 vs Westfield: Amherst Softball improves to 1-1 with a 10-0 win over Westfield this afternoon. Senior Samantha Nooyen had a great day, pitching a one-hitter and striking out 11 Westfield batters. Sam also had two hits, including a solo home run. Freshman Jackie Nooyen and senior Presley Voss joined Sam with two hits each. Jackie and senior Aubrey Chandler each blasted doubles. And sophomore Taylor Klieforth tied a school record by getting hit by a pitch during three straight at bats.
April 9 @ Menominee Indian: Amherst gets a nice 13-1 win at Menominee Indian on Thursday afternoon. Sam Nooyen picked up the win for Amherst giving up 2 hits while striking out 14 batters. Presley Voss led the Falcons with 2 doubles with fellow seniors Calee Schulist and Aubrey Chandler adding two hits each with Chandler blasting a double. Lexi Martin’s pinch hit kept her batting average at 1.000 for the year. Amherst Improves to 2-1 and travels to top seeded Wittenberg on Friday for a big CWC East matchup.
April 10 @ Wittenberg-Birnamwood: Amherst lost 12-2 to Witt-Birnamwood. The Falcons had eight hits but only two runs in the lopsided loss.
April 13 vs Shiocton: Amherst hangs on for a 4-1 win over Shiocton. Pitcher Ava Dambroski earned the win with Sam Nooyen picking up the save Calee Schulist led Amherst with two hits, including a double. Schulist also had the big play on defense, turning a huge double play.
April 14 vs Neillsville: Amherst wins 6-2 over Neillsville this afternoon as the Falcons had eight hits including four doubles. Sam Nooyen was the winning pitcher.
April 16 vs Manawa: Amherst softball had a nice 4-3 win over Manawa. Senior Sam Nooyen struck out 11 while giving up 8 hits and walking 1. Junior Sascha Gollon led the Falcons hitting with 2. Senior Presley Voss smashed a double, while fellow seniors Aubrey Chandler, Calee Schulist, and Delaney Conner each chipped in singles.
April 20 vs Nekoosa: The Lady Falcons won a non-conference game over Nekoosa 6-5 today. Six different Falcon batters had hits, with Jackie Nooyen having two RBIs. Sam Nooyen picked up the win for Amherst, giving up 12 hits but striking out four and walking three.
April 21 vs Clintonville: The team lost a tough one to Clintonville 1-0 last night. Sam Nooyen had two of Amherst’s four hits. Sam was also the hard-luck pitching, giving up five hits while striking out five. Amherst travels to Weyauwega on Thursday.
April 23 @ Weyauwega-Fremont: Amherst softball went on a run yesterday, beating Weyauwega 21-2 behind solid pitching from senior Sam Nooyen and sophomore Ava Dambroski. Sam and Ivy Boelk led the Falcons with three hits each. Calee Schulist, Delaney Conner, and Jackie Nooyen chipped in two hits each with Jackie slamming two triples. The team improves to 7-3 and will take on Wautoma today.
April 23 vs Wautoma: Amherst played a great game this afternoon, beating Wautoma 13-3 in five innings. Sam Nooye pitched a gem, giving up four hits while striking out four batters and walking two to earn the win. Calee Schulist and Sam Nooyen led Amherst with three hits each with both blasting doubles. Jackie Nooyen and Aubrey Chandler each chipped in two hits with Chandler hitting a triple. Lexi Martin lined a walk-off single with the bases loaded in the fifth inning to end the game. Amherst improves to 8-3 on the season.
April 28 vs Iola-Scandinavia: Softball took on rival Iola-Scandinavia and jumped out to an early 6-0 lead but Iola chipped away and took the lead for good in the sixth inning. The Falcons gave up 11 hits and committed 8 errors, which was too much to overcome. Jackie and Samantha Nooyen led Amherst with 2 hits each. Six other Falcons added singles. Final score was Iola 8, Amherst 7.
April 30 vs Wittenberg-Birnamwood: It was a tough day for the team, losing to first-place Witt-Birn 18-1. The Falcons fell to 8-5 on the season.
