The Amherst boys basketball team traveled to Westfield to open the new year and showed them what they are all about, winning 49-47. Senior Sully Perkins scored 19 points and recovered five rebounds. Right behind him was senior Michael Glodowski with 11 points and two assists.
The first game after holiday break was also on the road as the boys traveled to Bonduel on January 9 and sadly came up short 58-66. The team fought hard but wasn’t able to make up the points they needed. Senior Colton Vander Laan led the team with 19 points, and Perkins was right behind him with 12 points.
On January 13, the basketball team traveled to Nekoosa to fight for yet another win but unfortunately lost 50-55. The team put up a hard fight but wasn’t able to come out on top. Vander Laan led the team with 20 points and eight rebounds. Close behind was junior Taylan McCormick who held his own, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. The team fell short thanks to having 21 turnovers, and making only 6-of-13 free throws.
The rough times continued on January 16 when the Falcons lost 44-52 to Weyauwega-Fremont. The Falcons were close at halftime, but the score deficit kept getting bigger during the second half. The Falcons tried their hardest, with McCormick scoring 22 points and gathering two assists.
After a three-game losing streak, the Falcons brought back the W on January 20 versus the Clintonville Truckers. McCormick scored 22 points and Perkins was right behind him with 18 points. (Check out the gallery above for pictures of the action versus Clintonville, which also featured a 50/50 raffle to benefit the Amherst Fishing Club, our Amherst Pep Band, and our student section, nicknamed The Nest.)
Amherst fought hard against the Manawa Wolves on January 22 but wasn’t able to bring it back and claim the victory, losing 40-64. McCormick scored 17 points, and Glodowski had six assists.
It’s always tough to lose against Iola, especially at home. On January 26, the Falcons hosted the Thunderbirds and did a great job containing them in the first half in a packed gymnasium. Senior Cannen Hodges scored 15 points, Glodowski scored 14, and McCormick chipped in 12, but it wasn’t enough as Amherst suffered a 62-72 loss.
On January 29, Amherst hosted the Menominee Nation. Despite 16 points from Perkins, 13 from sophomore Antonio Vaquera, and 9 from McCormick — who also grabbed 9 rebounds — the Falcons ended up losing 50-59 to close out January.
It was an up-and-down month for the boys team, which finished January with an even 8-8 overall record. February and March Madness sits just over the horizon.
