After starting the season 6-0, the Amherst girls basketball team hit a rough patch in mid-December, ending the month at 6-5 overall.
The team was ready to break the losing streak when hosting Iola in a tough division battle on Monday, January 5, to start the new year. The team played tough thanks to double-digit scoring performances from senior Presley Voss and junior Alexis Wierzba, but the Thunderbirds edged them out 44-38.
On Thursday, January 8, the girls faced off against Bonduel, losing 51-19. Senior Voss attempted to light a flame for Amherst but the team just couldn’t get going against this formidable opponent.
But the streak was finally broken on January 13 thanks to senior Courtney Groholski’s buzzer-beating score against Weyauwega-Fremont, winning 51-50.
The rest of the month would prove to be an up-and-down battle for the Lady Falcons. They lost 37-66 to Little Chute on January 15, lost 48-63 to the Menominee Nation on 1/20, but won 41-34 against Manawa on January 22. The month ended with a lost against Pittsville on January 26 with a final score of 48-60.
Top scorers in those last four games included Voss (15 vs Manawa, including four three-pointers), Wierzba (10 vs Manawa, 26 vs Pittsville), and junior Hollie Singer (8 vs Manawa, 10 vs Pittsville). At the end of January, the team finished with an 8-10 record.
