The Amherst Girls Basketball team provided a rollercoaster ride for fans throughout the month of February, starting with a win and ending with a loss. Here’s how the month played out.
The first win of the month was on February 3 when they beat Shiocton 45-26. The top scorer of the game was junior Alexis Wierzba with 20 points, and the team had an impressive 29 defensive rebounds.
But on February 5, the Lady Falcons suffered a rough loss vs Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 23-64. Although they didn’t win, the loss helped the team light a fire for the next game on February 9 when the team won 44-29 vs Wild Rose. The top scorers for the game were junior Ivy Boelk with 14 and Wierzba with 12 points.
Friday the 13th was a bad one for the Lady Falcons, who lost 29-29 to Weyauwega-Fremont. Wierzba again led the team with 15 points.
Nekoosa traveled to Amherst on February 17, where the Falcons won 53-23, which picked up the team again. Wierzba dominated with 21 points.
Just two days later, the team suffered another loss to Bonduel, 25-62. Senior Calee Schulist chipped in five points, while Wierzba contributed five and Boelk added four. Boelk was 2-of-4 from the free throw line. The team finished 11-13 for the season and 5-9 in conference, earning the chance to host a Division 3 Sectional 2A first round game against Westby on February 24.
In a tough match, the Lady Falcons pulled out the win 30-23 thanks to 11 points from Boelk, 9 points from junior Hollie Singer, and 5 points from Wierzba. Singer was 2-for-2 for free throws in the win, plus Boelk recorded an impressive 15 rebounds and 3 steals.
But the end of the month brought the end of the season to our Amherst Girls. On Friday February 27, the girls traveled all the way to Aquinas for the Division 3 Sectional 2A Regional Semifinal, losing 27-75. Wierzba had 9 points, while seniors Courtney Groholski and Presley Voss had 6 points apiece. Wierzba and Voss were 100% from the free-throw line, making 2-of-2 shots each. Groholski and Wierzba each had five rebounds, while Boelk grabbed six boards.
Congratulations on a great season, and thanks to our Seniors!
