The Boys Basketball team went 4-4 during February with some big wins and tough losses. Here is a recap of the last month of the regular season.
February 3: The Amherst team took down Shiocton at home in a close win, 44-38, clinching the game in the last few minutes. Seniors Colton Vander Laan and Sully Perkins both scored 15 points, making up two-thirds of Amherst’s total points.
February 5: Amherst was unable to pull out the victory, losing a close game against Wittenberg 60-63. Perkins had a great day, scoring 26 points (six from three-pointers). Vander Laan added 13 points and seven rebounds. Junior Taylan McCormick added 11 points, as well.
February 9: Amherst traveled to Wild Rose and showed them who’s the boss, winning 51-30. Perkins scored 20 points (with three three-pointers) and seven rebounds. McCormick scored 12 and Vander Laan scored 9. Senior Michael Glodowski had five rebounds and four assists, while sophomore Antonio Vaquera had five boards and four assists.
February 10: Amherst suffered a disrupting loss against Tigerton, falling 66-41 at home. But McCormick put up 18 points, with Vander Laan added 14 and Perkins chipping in seven. Perkins led the board battle with eight, and Glodowski added four boards, three assists, and two steals.
February 12: Amherst beat Weyauwega-Fremont 75-67 thanks to 27 points from Vander Laan, 17 from McCormick, and 13 from Perkins. Leading the rebounds were McCormick with 9, Perkins with 8, and Vaquera with 5.
February 13: McCormick scored 22 and Vander Laan scored 19 in 74-61 win versus Mishicot on Friday the 13th. Perkins added 10 rebounds and three assists in the non-conference match-up.
February 19: Bonduel brought their A game to Amherst, beating the Falcons 65-74. Perkins had a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. McCormick had 23 points and 8eight rebounds, while Vander Laan contributed 15 points.
February 26: The season-ending game came against rival Iola-Scandinavia. The team fought hard but lost 55-65 to the Thunderbirds. McCormick led the scoring with 16 points, including two three-pointers. Vander Laan added 11 and Perkins added 10. Glodowski added 8 assists, as well.
Overall, the Amherst Boys ended with an overall 12-12 record, with a 5-9 conference record. They will host Westfield on March 3 in a Division 3 Sectional 1B first-round game.
