It took a while for spring to appear, but Falcons Baseball had a great April to start the season. The Falcons went 7-3 overall, 6-2 in conference play, leaving them in the hunt for a conference title as the season heats up in May.
Here are the game recaps for April.
April 7 vs Bonduel: Amherst Baseball finally took the field, opening the season with a conference game against Bonduel and winning 3-2. Pitcher Michael Glodowski struck out 9 in the win, with runs coming from senior Sully Perkins, senior Logan Hintz, and junior Jackson Lutz.
April 20 vs Nekoosa: The Falcons walked off Nekoosa 6-5. Cash Culklen recorded the first hit of the day by putting one into left field. Jackson Lutz, Michael Glodowski, Levi Cullen, and Sully Perkins all worked walks. Wyatt Beaudoin’s hard-hit ground ball to third was too much to handle, allowing the winning run to score. Amherst is now 5-1 overall, 4-0 in conference, and will host rival Iola-Scandinavia.
April 21 vs Iola: Amherst baseball beat Iola in a close game last night, winning 6-5. Michael Glodowski went six innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out eight. Jackson Lutz slammed the door in the seventh inning to earn the save. Offensively, Glodowski, Levi Cullen, Wyatt Beaudoin, Logan Hintz, Cash Cullen, and Jacob Ruggles all had hits. The boys are now 6-1 overall and 5-0 in conference.
April 23 @ Weyauwega-Fremont: Baseball won a close one last night, coming back from a 2-7 deficit in the first inning to beat Weyauwega 11-9. Senior Gage Glodowski and sophomore Jacob Ruggles each went 2-4 at the plate. The team improves to 6-0 in conference and 7-1 overall.
April 25 vs Wittenberg-Birnamwood: Amherst’s comeback fell short, losing 5-8 to Wittenberg. Wyatt Beaudoin went five innings, striking out five. Gage Glodowski and Jacob Ruggles had two hits each. Amherst is now 7-2 overall and 6-1 in conference.
April 28 @ Wittenberg-Birnamwood: Amherst dropped a tough one to Witt-Birn, falling 2-3. Michael Glodowski worked through 4-2/3 innings, giving up one earned run in the fifth while striking out six. Daniel Juarex came in on relief throwing 3+ innings and only giving up one earned run as well and striking out three. In the top of the seventh, Sully Perkins reached on an error, was advanced on a bunt by Juarez, and scored when Jackson Lutz hit a double to tie the game. Jacob Ruggles would also reach safely on an error, Glodowski was intentionally walked, and Levi Cullen brought in the go-ahead run via the walk to make it 2-1. However, Witt-Birn proved to be too much for the Falcons by tying it and ultimately winning in the bottom of the ninth.
